Turning Point

Any roaster will tell you the importance of the ‘turning point’ when turning those green beans brown. It’s an essential point which affects your entire roast, and is the first big change in a roast profile.

The Turning Point of Ripponlea marks another significant change for the suburb it resides in. Formerly known as Hawk & Hunter, the team from Undercover transformed this Glen Eira Avenue spot into a fresh new space earlier this year. The rebranding brought a cleaner feel to the light filled space, where soft grey tones, light timbers, and lush greens thrive. There’s a nod to the turning point in a roast profile, by way of a curved timber slat feature separating the dining area from the front bar and kitchen.

In line with its sister café, Collective Espresso, you are encourage to “meet me here’’, only this time it’s via neon lights and not tiles at the front entrance.

Jose Chavez heads the kitchen, creating enticing dishes like the Truffle Scramble, Origirazu with thick cut Nori Chips, and 18 hour Pork Belly with caramelised Wild Mushrooms.

Coffee is roasted by Undercover, with their White blend for milk based coffee, and rotating singles for black coffee. Their current El Salvadorian washed lot had a bold body, with slight citrus acidity.
