I’ve been craving sunny rays lately, but since its winter- I’ll just make the most of the next best thing: Sonny Rays.
Opening earlier this month, Sonny Rays is the third venture for couple Norm and Suzy Zeidan. The name itself is Norm’s actual nickname; he was raised in a family of café owners. His folks were part of that initial second wave on the Melbourne coffee scene, with a bar in Lygon Street, Carlton! That’s where Norm learned the art of espresso, on a lever Gaggia. Decades later, he’s still slinging shots behind a Slayer Espresso machine, as well as an under counter Mavam system out in the courtyard.
The venue itself has an appropriately sunny disposition with art work by Hello Tomato.
Coffee is sourced from Padre, and the menu offers honest food that’s in line with Melbourne’s current quality driven trend, and takes inspiration from a variety of cultural cuisines. Think Confit Duck Bennie, Turkish Eggs, and Japanese Fried Chicken Burgers.
They promise good coffee, good vibes, and good people: 3 qualities I crave in a café, as much as my skin craves the sunshine.
Open 7 days, find them at 328 Auburn Road Hawthorn.
