Time for a Pique Nique!
This corner spot has recently undergone a second facelift, after its original conversion from a neighbourhood milk-bar to the beloved Gardiner & Field café. Thianna breathed new life into this Union Road site, bringing with it a new name and fresh approach to the café experience.
After 25 years in the catering industry, feeding thousands of hungry mouths in the corporate world, Thianna is carving her own name into the café scene of Melbourne, and bringing with it a French touch. Pique Nique, which is the original French term for what we refer to as a picnic, pays homage to the communal activity of eating al fresco.... A common feature of the Union Street Reserve across the street. The interior has had a splash of colour, with hues of calming teal and fresh warming yellow reminding me of a perfect picnic. The menu offers an array of fresh fare, such as Avocado Mint Smash with a herb salad; Pique Nique Paleo Bread with pumpkin hummus; and Smoked Salmon Caviar with cashew sour cream on pumpkin seed bread.
Coffee is roasted locally by Symmetry, and head barista Duncan has mastered the extraction of their experimentally processed Parainema varietal from Honduras. Think French Cognac with raw cacao nibs! For those who want to venture out into the parkland, Pique Nique offers picnic baskets with all the essentials, including their signature French Roll with Roast Pork.
If you go down to the woods today, you're not only sure of a big surprise, but you’re sure to find Pique Nique ready for a picnic fit for the greatest of Teddy Bears!
