For a hospitality group that loves idioms, the name of their 9th café seems most fitting. ‘Nine Yards’ is brought to us by Steve Rowley, Matt Vero, Kenny Oliver and Lydia Hean. It joins their suburban gems, Left Field, Plain Sailing, and Port of Call.
True to their title, they’ve gone the whole nine yards with these former South Melbourne stables. Golden by Design are responsible for the interior, which features a modern Australian accent that hints to the menu, and one which showcases local native ingredients. It’s a feature I’ve not seen in many Melbourne cafes, and a refreshing addition. Think Wattleseed & thyme damper with bush honey; Aussie (French) Toast with wattle seed sugar, milo mascarpone, Anzac crumble, torched marshmallow, and macadamia; Crispy Salt Bush Lamb Fry up with cumin yoghurt, thyme roasted heirloom carrots, pepper berry molasses dressing, and fried egg; and Crispy Skin NT Barramundi with sweet potato wedges.
Coffee is sourced locally from Niccolo, with guest single origin beans from Ona.
Seating around 130, Nine Yards opens 7 days a week, and is located at 228-230 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne.
