Introducing Melbourne’s latest café: MAJOR MITCHELL.
Who is Major Mitchell you ask? While I thought it may have been the postmaster of the original Post Office that took up residency at this space, it’s actually a reference to the Major Mitchell Cockatoo also known as the Pink Cockatoo. These gorgeous birds are threatened species in Victoria, and both Katie & Mel adore their pink plumage and flowing crest that fits right in with their style.
Many of you may know Mel from South Yarra’s much loved Dilly Daly Café. She’s teamed up with her sister to open this gorgeous space, which is also home to Katie’s coffee roasting label “Daly St Roasters”.
The pair have decades of experience between them, having both learnt the joys of hospitality with their Yiayia (Grandmother) when they were kids.
They’ve both brought their personalities into this space, which has a calm vibe that features pink terrazzo, floral decorative, with soft pink and mint green tones.
I’m a self-confessed addict of Katie’s Candy Shop Blend, which smells like strawberry milkshake, and has delightful red berry notes, with a creamy mouth feel.
Head Chef Daniel Reyes Diaz has created an all-day breakfast and lunch menu with an array of fresh flavours, and lots of vegan & vegetarian options. Think Sautéed Mushrooms on Truffle Polenta, and Zucchini Fritters with Gingered Kale & Lavender Honey Burrata sprinkled with 24 Carat Gold. Fear not meat lovers, they also have a Slow Cooked Beef Brisket Croquette Sandwich, and Smoked Lamb Shoulder with Labneh and Crisp Pita Bread.
Located on the corner of Grange and Glen Huntly Roads, Major Michell is open daily from 7 am to 3:30 pm, and from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm on weekends.
