When Avtar Singh and Anoop Lokkur decided to open their own café, they set out to create a beautiful yet relaxed space that wasn’t a carbon copy of the myriad of industrial-chic or Scandinavian inspired cafes around Melbourne. Louis provides a hideaway from the busy Fitzroy streets around it, which took inspiration from traditional interior design elements.
Filled with natural light thanks to its large windows and high arched ceiling, the space could afford to have darkened walls that create a sense of privacy. Custom French wash, and subtle rounding and edge moulding of the tables creates a softened, organic feel.
Being a collaborative and curated space that’s dynamic, Louis also showcases the works of local artists on its walls.
Head chef Amit Grg has produced a modern Australian menu heavily featuring vegan and vegetarian dishes packed with flavour and nutrients. I thoroughly enjoyed the pumpkin salad, which Anoop actually created for his partner who loves pumpkins!
Coffee is sourced from Vacation, with their current single origin offering from Ethiopia Konga. As an espresso it had a beautiful floral aroma, and lemon acidity. Louis also showcases Kashaya, an Ayurveda caffeine free vegan tea.
They’re open weekdays 7am-4pm, and weekends 8am – 4pm.
Find Louis at 93 Moor Street, Fitzroy.
