Legacy

I tend to agree with Patti Davis… “How many hearts you touched”, that’s your legacy on this earth. It’s without a doubt that ‘Legacy’ of Camberwell has certainly touched the hearts of foodies across Melbourne. You only need to visit this Camberwell Road café to see the hordes of people lined up outside bracing the weather, to realise the pull it has on the heartstrings of many.

I first visited this site 5 years ago, when the original owner opened the venue as a reflection of their legacy in Melbourne’s hospitality scene. It’s since been handed over to Susan Rep, who much like her predecessors, has continued to lure folks from far and wide.

If you haven’t been here yet, you’ll find Legacy at the base of an apartment complex just across from the towering Boroondara City Council building. Inside the scene is set for what feels like a treat away from the usual deluge of everyday life. The interior offers a warm, consistent material palette, where the theme of stacked bond brickwork runs throughout, with greenery is draped, bringing in exterior elements and liveliness.

The menu offers its own form of liveliness, with dishes that have been created to satisfy the appetite and pop on an Instagram feed. Stand out dishes include the Sushi Bowl with seared salmon served on a bed of warm rice; and the very popular ‘Big Stack’ of orange and ricotta hotcakes topped with a dollop of vanilla bean mascarpone and berry compote.

Coffee is roasted by Dimattina, with their Easy Street blend offering a combination of fruit & nut flavours thanks to its Brazilian & Ethiopian components. They also rotate singles monthly for cold drip coffee, which is on display as a centrepiece of the communal table.

Service is always an essential when visiting a café, and ‘Legacy’ has a team of dedicated hospitality professionals ensuring the café runs like a well-oiled machine. I was fortunate enough to sit with a local who lives in the apartment complex above the café, and hear firsthand why he makes this his second home. It's hard not to fall in love with Legacy.

Where? 347 Camberwell Rd, Camberwell. Open daily from 7 am until 4 pm (Weekend hours: 8 am to 4 pm).
